Olive Branch Citizens Police Academy students practice traffic stops, study patrol duties

Members of Olive Branch’s Citizens Police Academy Class 33 met with officers April 23 to learn patrol procedures and take part in mock traffic stops, the Olive Branch Police Department said.

According to the department, Sgt. Michael Collier of the patrol division described how patrol shifts are structured, the number of arrests made so far this year, reports taken last year, roll call briefings, report-writing procedures and the number of calls answered so far this year. The department said Collier also explained the role of Flock cameras and why the department uses its current reporting system, and noted that every report and call begins with patrol before moving to other divisions.

Later, Officers Ronald Kent and Briana Thompson of Alpha Shift outlined reasons for conducting traffic stops and emphasized what motorists should — and should not — do when pulled over, the department said. The department said class members participated in hands-on exercises to conduct mock traffic stops and switched roles to experience scenarios from both the officer’s perspective and the violator’s point of view.

The department posted the account on social media identifying the event as CPA Class 33 of the Olive Branch Citizens Police Academy, the post said.
