Federal and state tax deadlines pushed back for Mississippians due to winter storm

All Mississippi taxpayers have until June 8 to file federal and state income and business taxes.
The Internal Revenue Service announced Tuesday and the Mississippi Department of Revenue announced today that they are extending the deadline due to Winter Storm Fern.
An initial version of the IRS announcement said that reprieve was for those in areas hardest hit by the storm, but the agency clarified that the relief applies to residents in all 82 counties of Mississippi.
The IRS and the Department of Revenue automatically identify taxpayers in covered disaster areas and apply the filing and payment relief. But the blanket reprieve means all taxpayers have the later deadline.
If a Mississippi taxpayer receives a late filing or late penalty notice for qualified filings, they should call the phone number on the notice and the IRS will remove the penalty. For state penalties, residents should call the Department of Revenue at 601-923-7700.
For part-time residents or business owners whose primary residence is out of state, they can request this tax relief by calling the IRS Special Services toll-free number at 866-562-5227 and the Mississippi Department of Revenue at the number listed above.
Those needing detailed information or seeking other relief available through the IRS can visit its website. President Trump has also approved individual assistance for people and businesses impacted by the storm.
