Northwest’s football opener canceled
Northwest Mississippi Community College officials Thursday announced the cancelation of that evening’s football game between Northwest and Mississippi Delta Community College.
“We deeply regret Mississippi Delta’s decision to withdraw from tonight’s contest,” said Northwest Mississippi Community College President Dr. Michael J. Heindl. “We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. We look forward to taking the field again on Thursday, Oct. 15 against Itawamba.”
Earlier this week, several players were found to be positive for COVID-19. In compliance with Mississippi Department of Health guidelines, all team members were tested Wednesday for the COVID-19 virus. After testing and contact tracing was completed, approximately one fifth of the team is in isolation or quarantine. With the remainder of the team deemed clear of the virus, the decision was made by Northwest coaches, officials and medical professionals to proceed with the contest.
After conversations with MACCC leadership and officials from Mississippi Delta, MDCC elected Thursday afternoon not to move forward with tonight’s contest.
“Our decision to play was made by following all COVID-19 protocols and procedures,” said Northwest Vice President of Instruction Dr. Matthew Domas. “Currently, less than 1% of our students and employees are in isolation for the virus. We continue to maintain a healthy campus community and we look forward to continuing our season.”
