County represented at basketball all-star games

The South beat the North 72-66 in the 4A/5A/6A Girls’ North-South All-Star basketball game Saturday at Mississippi College in Clinton. 

The North took a 23-20 lead after one quarter and led 41-33 at halftime.  But the South outscored their North Mississippi opponents 39-33 in the second half to come away with the victory.  

Of the DeSoto County players who took part Saturday, Horn Lake’s Indiya Bowen scored 11 points, six of which came in the second half. Thailan Payne of DeSoto Central and Hernando’s Damiya Cummings each contributed a free throw.  

Dekeria Walls of Harrison Central  led the South in scoring with 16 points and Mikayla Riley of Tupelo led the North with 15.  

Blake Jones of Hernando and Kyle Heard of Pontotoc were the North coaches. Jones said he had a great time coaching the game and called it, “a great experience.” 

The contest was one of four that took place Saturday, sponsored by the Mississippi Association of Coaches, featuring top junior players from across the state of Mssissippi.  The 4A/5A/6A boys’ game featured Horn Lake’s Dimp Pernell on the North roster, which defeated the South 107-81.
