Update on weekend deputy-involved shooting

We are learning a little more about what happened this past weekend when a shooting, involving a DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department deputy, took place.

Early information on the investigation indicates the deputy was responding to a call and apparently defending himself when shots were fired outside an auto parts store in Horn Lake late Saturday night.

The incident centered around a suspect who was inside the O’Reilly’s auto parts store on Goodman Road and an encounter with the deputy in the store parking lot.

An assistant district attorney is quoted in media reports as saying the encounter happened around 9 p.m. The encounter is what led to the shooting.

The deputy, on routine patrol, had responded to the O’Reilly’s store on a report of stolen property.

It was in the course of the encounter with the person in the parking lot that shots were reportedly fired. The suspect, wounded due to the incident, went to a hospital for treatment and at last report was improving from his wounds. The deputy was not hurt, officials said.
