Southaven swears in new fire chief; tourism tax extended for four years

Southaven officials sworn in Trey Bledsoe as the city’s new fire chief at the most recent meeting, the city said. Bledsoe has been with the Southaven Fire Department since 1999, and the mayor’s office said he has been a “tremendous asset” whose experience and expertise prepare him to lead the department.

The Board of Aldermen extended the city’s tourism tax for four years, the city said. Often called “Penny for your Parks,” the tax typically funds the Parks Enhancement plan, which currently includes an LED lighting project at Snowden and Greenbrook.

Officials also discussed expanding the city’s tennis footprint with an indoor tennis center and said the city will seek bids for arch signs at Snowden similar to those at Central Park and Cherry Valley Park, the city said. The board approved a planning agenda design review for a building at Silo Square that would include a coffee shop and a bank, the city said.

The mayor’s report noted a strong turnout for the Dizzy Deam World Series, the city said. The Board of Aldermen meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month; meetings are open to the public and livestreamed. The city provided its YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC45tmm7r_zN3QbaO6DcFfRQ) and the mayor’s blog (https://southaven.org/Blog.aspx?CID=1) for updates and subscriptions.
