Southaven Fire Department urges Halloween safety precautions
The Southaven Fire Department is urging residents to take steps to prevent accidents during Halloween celebrations, including making children visible to motorists and supervising younger trick-or-treaters.
The department advised children to carry flashlights or glow sticks and add reflective material to their costumes. It also said trick-or-treaters should cross at intersections, use sidewalks and watch for vehicles.
Younger children should have a responsible adult nearby, according to the department. The agency also recommended using battery-operated candles in jack-o'-lanterns instead of open flames and said parents should inspect treats before children eat them.
The Southaven Fire Department closed its message by wishing residents a safe and happy Halloween and emphasizing that costumes, rather than preventable accidents, should be the only frightening part of the holiday.
