Law Enforcement Honors Fallen Officers on Police Memorial Day

May 15 is designated as Police Memorial Day, a day to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The week surrounding the date is known as Police Week, during which officers across the country are recognized for their service and heroism.

Fallen officers are memorialized at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., where their names are engraved. Officers from cities from Tacoma to Tampa often travel to the capital to pay tribute to their fallen colleagues, according to organizers.

In North Mississippi, especially Lafayette and Panola counties, May 15 is a day of celebration and gratitude. The day also marks remembrance of Deputy U.S. Marshal Bob Dickerson, who was shot on May 15, 2020, during an operation in Oxford, Mississippi.

Deputy Dickerson was part of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, tracking a suspect involved in a homicide out of Arkansas. During a surveillance operation, the suspect’s vehicle was stopped, leading to a stand-off. As Deputy Dickerson observed the suspect, he was struck by gunfire. The suspect was fatally wounded in the exchange, and Dickerson was rushed to the hospital.

Despite injuries to his intestines requiring multiple surgeries, Deputy Dickerson continues to serve with honor and integrity. His quick response and resilience are celebrated, and he remains a symbol of courage for law enforcement in Mississippi, according to authorities.
