Gasoline prices back on the rise again
Gas prices have started a move back up after weeks of dropping around the Christmas-New Year’s holidays. The latest report from the American Automobile Association has the average price for regular unleaded gasoline at $3.075 in DeSoto County, $3.054 in the state of Mississippi, and nationally, the average price is at $3.415.
According to AAA, the Southaven-Olive Branch metro average price on Jan. 22 was $3.084, which was nearly two cents more than the day before and more than the $2.954 average from a week ago.
One month ago, the average price was $2.647 a gallon and a year ago, drivers were paying $2.998 a gallon.
Harken back to the summer of 2022, when the average regular unleaded gasoline price was $4.523 a gallon on June 13.
There are still places where the average gas price is under $3 a gallon. For instance,
- Pike County – $2.957 a gallon.
- Copiah County – $2.963
- Coahoma County – $2.973.
- Marion County – $2.983
- Leake County and Lamar County – $2.993

Around Northwest Mississippi, average prices include $3.04 a gallon in Tate County, $3.13 a gallon in Marshall, and $3.132 a gallon in Tunica County. Shelby County’s average price is at $3.156 a gallon.
National average prices have gone up about 13 cents a gallon in a week. Last month’s cold snap and the end of tax relief was mentioned as factors for the increase. There are reports the rise may be short-lived, so there’s hope the pressure on the wallet and the purse may lessen as we move forward in January into February.
