Tracksters perform at Tupelo meet

Three DeSoto County high school track and field teams took part in Friday’s NMMC Relays at Tupelo High School.  Competitors from Southaven, DeSoto Central, and Hernando were involved.  

As a team, DeSoto Central boys took second to Senatobia by a 63-43 score, Southaven finished seventh at 17.5 points and Hernando was 12th at six points. 

Hernando’s girls were third to Tupelo (54) and South Panola (33.5) in the team standings with 33 points. Southaven was seventh with 17.5 points and DeSoto Central finished 11th overall with seven points.  

Among the top DeSoto County performances, Hernando’s Kaitlyn Burge won the girls’ 1,600 meter run in a time of 5:19.14, Jessica Cartwright won the girls’ 300 meter hurdles with a time of 51.98 seconds; Gavin Brown of DeSoto Central took first place in the boys’ 800 meters in a clocking of 2:03.37, the DeSoto Central boys 4×100 meter (:44.61) and 4×200 meter teams (1:32.98) both won their events; while Southaven’s Kaylee Spencer won the girls’ triple jump at 31 feet, 1 inch,
