Carter, Foster post top-five finishes; Lake Cormorant wins twice in Tupelo

Hernando’s Kyleigh Carter and Lewisburg’s Autry Foster each earned a fifth-place finish Saturday at the ON Running Tupelo Invitational, while Lake Cormorant won two volleyball matches to reach the gold bracket in another busy day of tournament competition in Tupelo.

Olive Branch also picked up a volleyball victory over Alcorn Central. The county’s reported Sept. 12 results included girls volleyball and boys and girls varsity cross-country.

Carter, Foster lead county runners

Carter covered the girls varsity 5A–7A 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 29.5 seconds, according to Pirate Timing’s published results. Hernando teammate Abby White placed 12th in 21:27.8. Bree Espitia was 28th in 22:24.7, Grey Weiss 33rd in 22:40.3 and Jaidyn McMullen 47th in 23:36.0.

Carolyn Vanhoute led Lewisburg’s girls in 11th place at 21:14.2. Lauren Wilson followed in 14th at 21:40.6, Madison Simpson was 22nd in 22:02.8, Harper Hodges 25th in 22:14.2 and Jane Foster 26th in 22:16.0.

Center Hill’s Joan Shetler finished 30th in 22:32.3. Areej Saleh was 38th in 22:50.7, Mary-Magers Anderson 43rd in 23:25.1, Olive Olaleye 48th in 23:47.7 and Abigail Hubbard 55th in 24:33.0.

In the boys varsity 5A–7A race, Autry Foster ran 16:40.6 for fifth. Lewisburg’s Dylan Blanchard joined him in the top 10, finishing eighth in 16:58.8, and Cohen Berenzi placed 37th in 18:19.0.

Hernando’s Trace Thornhill placed seventh in 16:46.2, with Dixon Alderman 57th in 19:08.1. Jamari Higgins led Center Hill in 20th place at 17:42.1; Jesus Calzadilla was 45th in 18:40.5 and Lucas Roberson 54th in 19:02.9.

Lady Gators reach gold bracket

Lake Cormorant beat Alcorn Central 25–22, 25–17 and Booneville 25–19, 25–22. The Lady Gators’ team account confirmed that the Booneville victory sent them into the gold bracket against New Albany.

The Lady Gators finished 2–3 for the day. MaxPreps’ match reports list a 25–16, 25–19 loss to Tupelo, a 25–23, 25–14 loss to New Albany and a three-set loss to Walnut. Lake Cormorant took the opener against Walnut 25–22 before dropping the next two sets 25–10 and 15–12.

Laylie Moore recorded 10 kills against Walnut, according to the match statistics. Lake Cormorant’s posted record stood at 9–12 after the tournament.

Olive Branch sweeps Alcorn Central

Olive Branch defeated Alcorn Central 25–13, 25–18, according to the posted box score. MaxPreps also lists Saturday losses to Walnut, 2–1, and New Albany, 3–0. Complete set scores for those two matches were not available.

Olive Branch’s scheduled Saturday match with Pine Grove remains result not yet reported. The Conquistadors’ posted record was 9–7, excluding that unresolved fixture.

The outstanding Friday, Sept. 11, Southaven football game at South Panola also remains result not yet reported. Southaven’s athletics department had announced an 8:30 p.m. kickoff following a weather delay.
