Friday sports: County schools eliminated after football playoff losses

MHSAA 7A playoffs – first round

  • Starkville 44, Horn Lake 14: Lance McGowen caught two passes for Horn Lake touchdowns in the contest. 
  • Madison Central 28, DeSoto Central 14: Courtney Battle and Eric Perry scored for DeSoto Central, which had a 14-7 lead before Madison Central the final 21 points of the game. 
  • Tupelo 48, Lewisburg 7: Sam Thomas hit Andrew Hendrichovsky on a 38-yard score late in the contest after Tupelo held as much as a 42-0 lead.  

MHSAA 6A – first round

  • Neshoba Central 28, Lake Cormorant 22: Tylen Matthews scored a pair of touchdowns, including an 85-yard kickoff return that put the Gators ahead 22-21 with just over a minute to play. Neshoba Central scored on their final possession for the victory. Joshaun Williams also scored for the Gators on an 89-yard run. Lake Cormorant held a 14-0 lead at one point in the contest.

  • Leake Academy 28, Magnolia Heights 23

Prep boys basketball

  • Lewisburg 49, Holly Springs 47: Chandler Craig’s buzzer-beater three-pointer won the game for Lewisburg. 
  • Olive Branch 59, Rossville Christian 41
  • Southaven 71, Senatobia 58

Prep girls basketball

  • Holly Springs 31, Lewisburg 28
  • Southaven 40, Senatobia 38
