Center Hill wins in five; Lewisburg gives DeSoto County a second volleyball crown

October 16, 2026 | DeSoto County Sports Today

Center Hill and Lewisburg brought two state volleyball championships back to DeSoto County Thursday, with the Mustangs surviving a five-set final and the Patriots beating Ocean Springs in four. The October 15 varsity results also included Hernando’s 42–7 football loss at Tupelo.

Volleyball: Two titles in Clinton

Center Hill defeated Hancock 3–2 for the Class 6A championship at A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Mustangs won the opening two sets 25–16 and 25–22, then lost 17–25 and 25–27 before settling the match with a 15–4 fifth set. That decisive 11-point margin followed a fourth set in which the teams needed extra points. The championship bracket records the five-set victory, and MHSAA confirmed Center Hill’s title.

The Mustangs completed four consecutive playoff victories. They swept Callaway and Saltillo before defeating Neshoba Central in four sets Monday to reach Clinton. Thursday’s win gave Center Hill the finish it needed after Hancock erased its two-set lead.

Lewisburg followed with the Class 7A crown, defeating Ocean Springs 3–1 at Mississippi Christian University. The Patriots won 25–23 and 31–29, dropped the third set 14–25 and closed out the championship 25–16. The two opening sets required Lewisburg to win the final points of tightly contested games; the fourth gave the Patriots a nine-point finishing margin. MHSAA confirmed the championship, with the set scores detailed in DeSoto County News’ match report.

Football: Hernando falls at Tupelo

Hernando lost 42–7 on the road in Region 1-7A play. The Tigers moved to 5–2 overall and 1–1 in the region, while Tupelo improved to 8–0. Hernando’s next posted game is at home against Lewisburg October 23 at 7 p.m., according to the Tigers’ varsity schedule. The dated game page explicitly lists Thursday’s score as final.
