The Southaven Fire Department paused to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, including 343 New York City firefighters who responded and died, the department said. The department said the tragedy forever changed the nation and the fire service.
The department also remembered firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical services personnel, military members, civilians and others whose lives were lost or forever changed. It honored those who responded in the days, weeks and months after the attacks, as well as people who later died from illnesses related to their service at Ground Zero.
For those in the fire service, the department said, Sept. 11 is more than a date in history. Twenty-five years after the attacks, it said its promise remains: “WE WILL NEVER FORGET!”
