Portion of Old Airways Road closed to traffic
As of Monday, May 27, Southaven city officials have closed the north section of Old Airways Road at Church Road to traffic as preparations start for the future expansion of I-55 in the area.
Traffic is now being rerouted from Old Airways at Starlanding Road to Airways Blvd. by way of Miller Road. Signs were put in place on May 13 ahead of Monday’s closure.
Left turns to the northern section of Old Airways Road from Church Road have complicated traffic congestion in this area.
The upcoming I-55 widening project will widen the interstate to ten lanes, widen Church Road under the overpass and add a loop in this specific area at the southeast quadrant of the interchange, causing this connection of the road to Church Road to be removed.
City officials said that MDOT will add a 90-degree road from Old Airways back to new Airways as part of this project.
With an official projected construction start day of early 2026, the city is preparing drivers for this change by rerouting them to new Airways via Miller Road.
