Olive Branch police issue scam alert to residents

The Olive Branch Police Department urged residents to be vigilant against scammers and to contact police if they believe they have been targeted, the department said.

The department said common scams include calls claiming to be from law enforcement, government agencies or utility companies demanding immediate payment; text messages requesting personal or banking information; online marketplace scams involving fake buyers or sellers; emails with suspicious links or attachments; and prize scams that require payment to claim winnings.

The department advised residents never to provide personal, banking or financial information to unsolicited callers and not to send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or other electronic payments to people they do not know, the department said. It also advised verifying requests by contacting the organization directly using an official phone number and being cautious of anyone creating a sense of urgency or threatening immediate consequences.

The alert included the name of Mayor Ken Adams and the City of Olive Branch government, the department said. Anyone who believes they have been targeted or have fallen victim to fraud should contact the Olive Branch Police Department for assistance, the department added.
