Local law enforcement supports Memphis officers involved in shooting

Local law enforcement are expressing support, thoughts and prayers for Memphis police brethren involved in an early morning incident that killed a police officer and a suspect.

Memphis police reported that officers were called about 2 a.m. Friday, April 12 to a suspicious vehicle call at Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue.

Officers were fired upon as they approached the vehicle and shots were returned by the police.

“Two officers and two suspects were struck by gunfire,” Memphis police said in a release.

The vehicle left the scene and was then found in the 400 block of Hewlett Road, where one suspect was immediately taken into custody and another was caught nearby a short time later.

Two officers were taken to Regional One Hospital, as were the two suspects.

It’s now been reported that one officer and one suspect have died from their wounds.  The policeman who died has been identified as Officer Joseph McKinney.

Southaven, Hernando and Horn Police Police Departments have expressed on social media their support, thoughts and prayers for the Memphis police officers involved.

Memphis police said District Attorney Steve Mulroy has been contacted and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
