DeSoto County sheriff named Mississippi American Legion law enforcement officer of the year

The American Legion Department of Mississippi named DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas E. Tuggle II its 2026 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office said.

The award recognizes an officer who exemplifies exceptional community involvement, professional excellence and dedication to public safety, the American Legion department said.

Tuggle was chosen from 87 nominees representing law enforcement agencies across Mississippi, the sheriff’s office said, a selection the office said reflects his leadership, mentorship and commitment to the safety and well-being of DeSoto County residents.

As Mississippi’s recipient, Tuggle will advance to the national American Legion competition in Indianapolis, where he will represent the state against 424 nominees from across the country, the sheriff’s office said. The office said the announcement post was sponsored by Mississippi Ale House and Working Solutions of Memphis LLC.
