It’s not just the 662 anymore

June 28 – Starting in late 2025, phone users in the 662 area code will begin to see a new area code for phone numbers of users who may be just down your street.

The Mississippi Public Service Commission released information Thursday announcing that it has approved a new 471 area code assigned to the same area that currently has the 662 area code ahead of phone numbers you dial.

According to the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), numbering resources for the 662 area code are anticipated to be exhausted by the third quarter of 2026.

The 471 area code won’t be for a specific land coverage location, however, but new phone numbers assigned after a certain date in the 662 area will be assigned the 471 area code. Current phone numbers with the 662 area code will not be changing, the switch will be for new phone assignments once 471 is activated.

Phone customers will also continue to use 10-digit dialing that includes the area code plus the phone number to make local calls.

You will soon find the 471 area code being used with phone numbers in the Northern District counties of Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clay, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Lowndes, Marshall, Montgomery, Monroe, Oktibbeha, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo,Tunica, Union, Webster, Winston and Yalobusha counties.

In addition, the 471 area code will serve a large area of the Public Service Commission Central District including Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, parts of Kemper, Noxubee, Sharkey, Sunflower, Washington and Yazoo counties.

At this time, no changes need to be made by customers. Further updates will be announced

as the implementation process begins in late 2025 or early 2026.

The news release announcing the action is found on the Mississippi Public Service Commission website.
