SPORTS ETC.: The Mississippi Association of Coaches held its annual All-Star Basketball Games on Saturday at Wayne County High School in Waynesboro. The Class 4A/5A/6A boys’ North team, coached by Center Hill head coach Newton Mealer, defeated the South 89-81. Center Hill’s Kaeden Laws was named North Most Valuable Player, after an 18-point, five-rebound performance. DeSoto County was also represented on the North roster by Kareem Thompson of Horn Lake, Jordan Hibbler of Southaven, and Donovan Sanders of Lake Cormorant.
DeSoto Central volleyball was runner up and Lewisburg took third in the Gold Division of the River Cities Classic tournament played in Arlington, Tenn. over the weekend.
In bracket round play, DeSoto Central (13-4) defeated Lewisburg but lost to Houston (Germantown, Tenn.) in the tournament finals. Lewisburg won matches against Munford, Chester County, DeSoto Central, and Bartlett during the tournament before its loss to the Lady Jags in the bracket round.
Oxford’s volleyball match with Southaven Thursday has been postponed to a later date with the Southaven team in a quarantine. As a division match, it must be played and not canceled.
