Tuesday sports: Lewisburg volleyball still unbeaten in Region 1-7A

The Lewisburg girls’ volleyball swept county rival DeSoto Central 3-0 Tuesday night at The ‘Burg, and with the win stayed undefeated in Region 1-7A matches. Scores of Tuesday’s contest were 25-22, 25-20, 25-18 for the Lady Patriots.

The first set stayed tight through a 10-10 tie, when Lewisburg opened a 14-10 lead. A kill following a Lady Jag timeout increased that margin to 15-10 Lady Patriots. DeSoto Central would rally to get within 16-14, but Lewisburg scored four of the next five for a 20-15 lead.  Lewisburg would go on from there to take the first set victory.

While the second and third sets both went Lewisburg’s way, they had to work to do it, as the Lady Patriots had to rally from behind in both sets.  DeSoto Central had as much as a 13-6 lead after an ace serve, but it was at that point Lewisburg started their rally. A kill from Jordis Newsome cut the margin to 14-11 and a pair of blocks would tie the set at 16-all.  A run of six points led Lewisburg to a 20-16 advantage when Kelis Parker served an ace. Kaydi Blanchard’s kill forced a DeSoto Central timeout at 22-18 Lewisburg and another kill finished the set at 25-20.

Once again in the third set DeSoto Central held the early lead, this time at 6-1 when a Lewisburg volley went long and coach Amy Hendrichovsky asked for a timeout. That seemed to settle the Lady Patriots down, as Lewisburg would tie the set at 9-9 following a kill and would take the lead after a Lady Jag sideout tied the set at 10-10.

Later in the set, a Lady Jag volley went wide of the court and Lewisburg claimed a 20-13 edge. They kept a seven-margin until Reese McIntosh served a Lady Jag ace to get within 22-17. But, Lewisburg scored three of the final four points with the final point coming off a tipped ball for the match-deciding point.

“I thought we maintained our fight and competitiveness and we were able to find a way,” Hendrichovsky said.

Lewisburg now plays at Oxford Thursday in a match featuring the top two teams in the region and then joins DeSoto Central this weekend to host the Mid-South Classic, a tournament featuring some of the best teams in Mississippi and Tennessee. A team from Alabama will also take part in the classic, which will start Friday evening and continue during the day Saturday at both Lewisburg and DeSoto Central gymnasiums.
