DeSoto Central baseball scored in only two innings of their nine inning affair with Hernando Tuesday night, but both times the Jaguars bunched a trio of runs together. The second time the Jaguars did that, it was enough for a 6-3 extra inning victory and a 1-0 lead in the MHSAA 6A second-round playoff series.
A throwing error after a base hit from DeSoto Central’s Josh King would score Christian Newsome for what would become the game-winning run in the ninth. Austin Kirkpatrick’s triple to center field would score two more runs and clinch the Jaguar victory.
Hernando took an early 3-0 lead with a run-scoring single from Cade Koczka in the bottom of the second, followed by a two-run double from Hallas Lawson in the third.
But DeSoto Central tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth with a two-run single from Luke Sides and another hit from King.
Sides was credited with the pitching victory for DeSoto Central, relieving starter Gavin Brassfield with two out in the seventh. Sides struck out six and allowed two hits over 2.1 innings.
Hernando used three pitchers in the game and Preston Johnson was tagged with the loss after pitching the final 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs and fanning five.
