The Itawamba AHS Indians (IAHS) requested that their football game with Lewisburg be moved up to Thursday night to avoid an expected drenching, especially on the trip home from “Jamestown” back to Fulton.

The Patriots agreed to the request, also to avoid a soggy artificial turf, but at the end of the night Thursday, it was IAHS doing the drenching on the Patriots, in particular Cayden Prestage, who rained down a trio of touchdowns in the Indians’ 47-23 victory.

Lewisburg put themselves in a hole early, when Jacob Manns’ pass was picked off by IAHS defensive back Cooper Waddle, who would then go untouched into the end zone with just over two minutes gone in the contest for a 7-0 Indians lead.

The Patriots answered with a drive, climaxed by a seven-yard touchdown run by Levi Presley for a 7-7 tie with just under six minutes left in the quarter.

But Prestage scored his first touchdown of the game with 1:26 left in the quarter on a one-yard plunge for a 14-7 IAHS lead at quarter’s end.

Itawamba AHS broke the game open in the second quarter, as Prestage, quarterback John Austin Wood, and Jamarion Gaston each found the end zone. Lewisburg answered with a score from Lucas Edwards as the Patriots trailed 34-13 at halftime.

With the Indians expecting to receive the opening kickoff for the second half, Lewisburg chose to open the half with an onside kick, which the Patriots recovered.and which led to a 22-yard run from Manns for a score that made the score 34-20.

Lewisburg would try the onside kick again but IAHS recovered the ball this time but failed to score on this particular drive.

Later in the third quarter, Manns had to leave the game with an injury and sophomore quarterback Noah Glover would take over.

Less than a minute after that, placekicker Robert Becker hit a 27-yard field goal to shrink the Indians’ margin to 34-23, but Prestage found the end zone again before the third quarter ended with IAHS now on top 40-23.

Itawamba AHS would get one more touchdown with a 12-yard run from Christian Trice for the 47-23 final score.

Lewisburg, now 0-5 for the season, hosts Hernando to open Region 1-7A action on Friday, Oct. 4. Itawamba AHS, now 3-2 for the year, takes next week off and will be at Amory on Oct. 11.
