Texas-sized sweep for Hustle in Austin

The Memphis Hustle, the Grizzlies’ NBA G League affiliate, completed a two-game sweep over the Austin Spurs with a 108-78 win on Saturday. Memphis stands at 4-2 in the South Division of the Showcase Cup with six games to play.

Memphis used a balanced scoring attack that included double-digit points from all five starters. Freddie Gillespie (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Ahmad Caver (18 points, 10 assists) posted double-doubles to lead the Hustle. Shaq Buchanan totaled 19 points (7-13 FG), seven rebounds and three assists. Matthew Hurt led the second unit with 17 points and nine rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting.  

Joshua Primo scored a team-high 18 points (8-21 FG) while adding six assists for the Spurs. Joe Wieskamp added 14 points, six rebounds and one block. Devontae Cacok posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Memphis led the game wire-to-wire and stretched its lead to as many as 32 points in the final quarter. The Hustle limited the Spurs to 6-of-37 shooting (16%) from 3-point range and forced 22 points off turnovers.

The Hustle took a big lead as early as the first quarter, forcing the Spurs into seven turnovers in the first 12 minutes. Memphis outscored Austin 12-3 in points off turnovers in the first quarter, while Caver and Hurt each scored seven points in the first, helping Memphis to a 30-18 lead.

Memphis led Austin 56-35 after the first half, outshooting them 56% to 33% from the floor. Buchanan led the Hustle with 12 points at the half.

The Hustle outscored the Spurs 13-5 to start the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 32 points and putting the game out of reach. The Spurs record now stands at 2-4.
