Friday sports: Rainy night in the Swamp for Gators, Chargers
Sep 27, 2024- Two football teams looking to bounce back from previous week losses met on the field at Lake Cormorant Friday night. The home Gators still had a bitter taste from last week’s loss in the Lake Bowl to Horn Lake, and Southaven, losing to Cleveland Central last week, was looking for their first win for new coach Randal Montgomery.
That search will have to continue another week for the Chargers, as the Gators dominated Southaven 34-8 for a homecoming victory.
Corderrius Bullock scored two rushing touchdowns and added another on a fumble recovery “scoop and score” in the Lake Cormorant homecoming victory, played, as every other game in DeSoto County Friday night, in a steady rain,
Bullock staked Lake Cormorant to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring twice on a pair of two-yard dives. Defenses stepped up in the second quarter and the 13-point was carried into halftime.
The Gators picked up the offense in the third quarter with Joshaun Williams crossing the goal line on a one-yard run, followed by Bullock’s third touchdown for the night on a fumble recovery and run into the end zone for a 27-0 lead.
Southaven finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. On a fourth-down punt play by Lake Cormorant, the snap went over the head of punter Blake Beal, who chased down the ball to the five-yard line. Instead of falling and covering the ball deep in his own territory, Beal smartly kicked the ball through his own end zone to conceive a safety.
Another fumble recovery carried into the end zone for a touchdown by Roderick Owens gave the Gators a 34-2 lead. Southaven would take the kickoff after the touchdown for a 70-yard score but that would be the last scoring threat by either team.
District play is nearing for both teams, but Southaven will have one more non-district game before that, next Friday, Oct. 4 at Clarkdale. Lake Cormorant takes the next week off before starting Region 1-6A play at home against Grenada on Friday, Oct. 11.
