Horn Lake Aldermen Oct. 6: Park Trail, GE Vernova Tax Break

A repaved walking trail at one of the city’s parks, a tax break resolution for energy company GE Vernova, and closed-door talks about a possible new industry are on the docket when the Horn Lake aldermen meet Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. at Horn Lake City Hall, 3101 Goodman Road West, according to the agenda posted by the city.

Mayor Jimmy L. Stokes II will preside. The board includes Ward 1 Alderman Joshua Langston, Ward 2 Alderman Tommy Bledsoe, Ward 3 Alderman Jackie Bostick, Ward 4 Alderman Kelly Smith, Ward 5 Alderwoman LaShonda Johnson, Ward 6 Alderwoman Charlotte Armstrong and At-Large Alderman Larry McKinney.

Walthall Park Walking Trail Repaving

One of the more visible items for residents is a request to accept a quote from Hollingsworth Paving Company to cold mill the existing walking trail at James Robert Walthall Memorial Park, 2500 Meadowbrook Drive, add new base and repave it. The paving work is listed at $54,732.66, described as the best bid. Sidewalk repairs at the same park would add $3,570, for a total of $58,302.66.

According to the agenda, the project would be paid for with occupancy tax proceeds, with the board finding that it promotes the city’s attributes, tourism and economic development.

GE Vernova Tax Exemption and Economic Development

The consent agenda also includes a resolution memorializing the board’s prior approval of an ad valorem tax exemption for GE Vernova, the energy equipment company that operates a facility in Horn Lake. The resolution would authorize the mayor and city clerk to sign and submit the paperwork needed to finalize it.

Economic development is also on the list for the end of the meeting. The agenda calls for an executive session to discuss the proposed location of a new industry and the prospective expansion of a business within the city. Names of the companies involved were not listed on the agenda.

Other Horn Lake Aldermen Agenda Items

  • Water plant payment: Estimate No. 9 of $114,617.50 to Phillips Contracting Co. for the Holly Hills Water Treatment Plant Improvements Project.
  • City Hall upkeep: A $6,177.40 quote from TNT Pressure Washing to pressure wash the outside of City Hall, the lowest and best bid received.
  • Fire Department: Stipend increases of $500 a year for six firefighters who passed rank testing, two promotions, a budget amendment and one resignation.
  • Police Department: The hiring of a new telecommunicator, promotions for two telecommunicators, one resignation and one termination.
  • Public Works and Parks: New hires including a water operator in training, a mechanic, a parks administrative assistant and seasonal workers, along with several budget transfers.
  • Property cleanup: Resolutions to clean private properties and to assess the cleanup costs to the property owners.
  • Proclamation: A proclamation for Extra Mile Day.
  • Recognition: Employee service awards.

The meeting also includes time for citizen remarks, along with reports from the mayor, aldermen, department heads and the city attorney. Board meetings are open to the public. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.
