State leads the nation in low gas prices

More Americans expected to travel over the Fourth of July holiday

Mississippi continues to be the place drivers go for cheap gas, as the Magnolia State holds the distinction of being where the lowest average pump prices are located.

According to the American Automobile Association, or AAA, on Tuesday, June 27, the statewide average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline was $2.989, which is slightly lower than Monday’s $2.991 average.

Louisiana was second on the list at an average of $3.101, followed by Tennessee at $3.111. Alabama and Arkansas round out the top five, all under $3.125.

A week ago, Mississippi pump prices averaged $3.010 a gallon and the average was $3.001 one month ago. However, one year ago, the average pump price in Mississippi was over four dollars a gallon at $4.411.

The highest average pump price for regular unleaded gasoline recorded in Mississippi came on June 12, 2022 at $4.525 a gallon.

AAA lumps the Southaven and Olive Branch communities together to represent DeSoto County and on Tuesday, the average regular unleaded gas price was at $3.015 a gallon, three-and-a-half cents less than a week ago. While slightly higher than a month ago, the price is still less than the $4.41 average of one year ago.

GasBuddy.com, a driver-driven price reporting website, said Americans will spend $2.6 billion less on gasoline during the period from June 30-July 5, compared to last year.  The fuel savings will come in handy since more Americans are expected to travel over the Fourth of July holiday than ever before. About 50.7 million Americans plan to travel more than 50 miles during the holiday, more than ever before.
