Southaven Mayor and Board of Aldermen Review City Updates
Jim Flanagan, who has spent 40 years with the Desoto County Economic Development Council, is retiring. He introduced the new economic development team to the mayor and board. Flanagan has played a significant role in attracting large developments to Desoto County, according to city officials.
The Board of Aldermen approved a rezoning request for more than 150 acres on the north side of Desoto Road, between Highway 301 and Horn Lake Road. The land will be designated as a Planned Urban Development, according to city documents.
Mayor Musselwhite recognized the upcoming retirement of Fire Chief Danny Scallions, who has served Southaven for 34 years. The mayor thanked Scallions for his service and wished him a happy retirement. The city announced that the final board meeting for Scallions will be held tonight.
The city is preparing for several upcoming events, including the Dizzy Dean World Series starting June 25, which is expected to feature approximately 140 teams. Additionally, the annual Fireworks Extravaganza is scheduled for Saturday, July 4.
Community members and supporters donated to the city’s Animal Shelter in memory of Kitty Eder, with contributions from Lucky Dog, Cindy Bryant, Jerry Jordan, and Steel Warehouse. The city holds meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, which citizens can attend in person or via livestream. More information is available on the city’s YouTube channel and blog.
