Silo Square Sunflower Festival in Southaven Canceled
The first Silo Square Sunflower Festival will not happen. The Southaven development announced Friday, Oct. 9, that Saturday’s festival is canceled because Hurricane Isaias strengthened overnight and still threatens the area with heavy rain and wind gusts up to 45 mph. Organizers said the event will not be rescheduled.
“The safety of our vendors, participants, and guests is our top priority,” Silo Square said in its announcement, calling the decision the best one for everyone involved.
What the Silo Square Sunflower Festival Had Planned
The brand-new festival was set for Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Promotional posts from Silo Square promised a full day of fall activities, including:
- Live music
- A pumpkin patch
- A sunflower stand
- Art and food vendors
- Family-friendly activities
- A classic car show
Silo Square first announced the event in late September as its “first annual” Sunflower Festival, and the promotional poster featured the Make-A-Wish and Landers Auto Group logos. Later posts introduced the lineup of vendors, including a mobile coffee trailer.
This year the festival was paired with the Cars for a Cause car show, an annual fundraiser for the Mid-South chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, according to the DeSoto Times-Tribune.
A Wish Will Still Be Granted
The cancellation came with some good news. Silo Square said that thanks to its vendors and local business sponsors, the event raised enough to grant a wish for a local Make-A-Wish child even without the festival taking place.
“While this certainly isn’t the outcome we had hoped for, there is still a bright spot,” the announcement said. Organizers thanked everyone who supported the new event and said they look forward to seeing the community at Silo Square soon.
Isaias Weather Expected Saturday
The National Weather Service in Memphis has DeSoto County under a Wind Advisory from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, with gusts up to 45 mph, and a Flood Watch from 1 a.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters expect rain to be likely through the day before the remnants of Isaias move out early Sunday.
The Sunflower Festival joins a growing list of local weekend events affected by the storm. Southaven’s Fallfest has moved to Sunday, Oct. 11, and the Hernando Water Tower 10K and Half Marathon has been canceled.
Silo Square has more events coming up. Its first WingFest, presented by Central BBQ, is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, from noon to 4 p.m.
