scammers target Memorial Day with fake traffic alert texts

Scammers have been active this Memorial Day, according to reports received by authorities. A common scam message impersonates the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, warning recipients of delinquent traffic infractions.

The message claims that unless fines are paid by May 25, the recipient’s driving privileges will be suspended immediately starting May 26. It also states that the recipient’s driving record will remain delinquent until fines are paid and that a debt collection process may be initiated. The message includes a link to a fake payment site and urges recipients to act quickly to avoid losing their driving privileges.

Officials advise the public to delete such messages and not click on any links. The scam message ends with a warning to delete the message, emphasizing it as a scam.

Authorities remind residents to be cautious of unsolicited messages claiming to be from official agencies. They recommend verifying any suspicious notices directly with the agency before taking action.
