Rollover accident results in double fatalities

Aug 12, 2024 – Two Byhalia teenagers have died after a one-vehicle crash late Sunday night in DeSoto County.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) Monday night provided information about the crash on I-269 near the Laughter Road interchange that occurred shortly after 11 p.m.

According to MHP, a 2013 GMC Sierra driven by Angel Salazar, age 17 of Olive Branch, was traveling on I-269 when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over several times.

Angel Salazar received severe injuries from the crash and was hospitalized.

Two passengers in the vehicle died as a result of the crash, however. They were identified as Brandon S. Munoz, age 17, and Santiago Geron-Rico, age 18, both of Byhalia. Munoz was dead at the scene and Geron-Rico was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials said the eastbound lanes of I-269 at the Laughter Road interchange were closed during the crash investigation. The roadway was reopened about 1:15 a.m. Monday morning.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
