Pump prices continue a slight fall, but higher than last month

Gas prices in DeSoto County dipped lower this week compared to last, but drivers will still find prices remain above the levels they were a month ago.

A gallon of regular gas was in the Southaven-Olive Branch area $3.026 on average Thursday, Feb. 16, according to AAA. That’s 5.4 cents lower than a week ago, but it is higher from one month ago, when the average price of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.954 a gallon.

One year ago, the average price of gasoline was $3.212 a gallon.

In Mississippi, the current average price of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.045, which continued a lower trend from a week ago at $3.092, according to AAA. One month ago, the Mississippi average price was $2.895, but one year ago the average pump price was $3.185 a gallon.

Analysts at GasBuddy.com have recorded an increase in demand from drivers as the winter weather gives way to warmer temperatures in the last couple of weeks. But even as refineries are being brought back online from freezing weather damage in December which impacted gas prices, more could be taken offline in the coming weeks.

“Refinery maintenance season will soon be in full force,” Gasbuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement, adding that maintenance would likely push prices upward.

The lowest gas prices in DeSoto County are reported on the Gasbuddy website.
