Pedestrian struck, killed by train in Olive Branch Thursday morning

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — A 54-year-old Olive Branch man was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train near Highway 178 and Old Goodman Road, according to the Olive Branch Police Department.

Officers were flagged down around 9:28 a.m. by a BNSF train conductor who reported that the train had hit a pedestrian. Responding officers located the victim, identified as Michael Mayer, who was confirmed by the conductor as the individual struck.

Emergency medical personnel treated Mayer at the scene, but he did not survive his injuries. DeSoto County Coroner Josh Pounders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by BNSF Railroad Police.
