Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday in DeSoto County

DeSoto County residents get an extra hour this weekend: daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks fall back one hour to 1 a.m. Central Standard Time. Because the change falls right after Halloween night, anyone out late Saturday in Southaven, Olive Branch, Horn Lake, Hernando or Walls will gain an hour before the morning.

When Daylight Saving Time Ends This Year

The switch happens overnight Saturday into Sunday. Most phones, computers and other connected devices update on their own. Clocks you will probably need to change by hand include:

  • Microwave and oven clocks
  • Car dashboard clocks
  • Wall clocks and older alarm clocks
  • Thermostats, sprinkler timers and some security systems

If you have an early Sunday shift or church service, check the time on any alarm that does not update automatically.

Earlier Sunsets Start Sunday

The most noticeable change will be in the evening. Sunrise and sunset times for the Hernando area show how the time change shifts daylight:

  • Saturday, Oct. 31: sunrise about 7:20 a.m., sunset about 6:07 p.m. (CDT)
  • Sunday, Nov. 1: sunrise about 6:21 a.m., sunset about 5:06 p.m. (CST)

That means the evening commute on Monday, Nov. 2, and on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, will end in or near darkness for many drivers on I-55, I-69, I-269, Goodman Road and Highway 78. Mornings will be brighter for school buses and early commuters.

Safety Reminders for the Time Change

Fire officials often use the time change as a reminder for simple home safety checks. This weekend is a good time to:

  • Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and change batteries if needed
  • Check flashlights and emergency kits as storm season and colder weather approach
  • Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists in the earlier darkness, especially around schools and neighborhoods
  • Turn on headlights earlier and allow extra following distance on the evening drive

Daylight saving time will return on Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks spring forward again.
