One killed and one injured in Sardis shooting, authorities say

A shooting in Sardis, Mississippi, left one person dead and another injured early Sept. 27, according to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded at approximately 4:30 a.m. to Highway 51 near Dewberry Street to assist the Sardis Police Department with a reported shooting.

Authorities said two people were injured. Gary Walls, Jr., sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Janiya Fonville was transported to Panola Medical Center for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.

The Sardis Police Department is leading the investigation, which remains active and ongoing. The Sheriff’s Office said no further information was available and encouraged anyone with information to contact the Sardis Police Department.
