Southaven Aldermen Oct. 20 Agenda: Rural King Tax Incentive

A tax incentive request from Rural King tops the planning items on the Southaven aldermen October 20 agenda. The Southaven Mayor and Board of Aldermen meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at City Hall, 8710 Northwest Drive. The agenda notes that items may be added or removed.

Rural King tax incentive on Stateline Road

Rural King is asking the board to approve its application for the city’s Tax Incentive Program for a revitalization project proposed at 550 Stateline Road. The agenda does not give details on the size or timing of the project. Rural King is a farm and home supply retailer with stores across the Midwest and South.

Other planning items on the Southaven aldermen October 20 agenda

  • A conditional use permit for an auto repair shop at 905 Town & Country, Suite F (applicant Charlan Buenaventura)
  • A conditional use permit for Grand Slam Haircuts, a barbershop at 3038 Goodman Road East (applicant Rita Moore)
  • A conditional use permit for an auto repair facility at 8600-8668 Whitworth Street (applicant Richard Thomas)
  • A correction of a scrivener’s error on the plat for the Mace one-lot subdivision

Police contracts and public safety

Several items involve the Southaven Police Department:

  • A contract with Motorola
  • A contract with Pitney Bowes
  • Approval of a bid for an SPD generator modification project
  • Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) interlocal agreements with DeSoto County, Olive Branch and the Town of Walls

The Justice Assistance Grant program is a federal grant run by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance. Neighboring agencies often share a single award through interlocal agreements, which is why Southaven’s item names DeSoto County, Olive Branch and Walls. The money typically goes toward equipment, training and other law enforcement needs.

Other business

Aldermen will also consider an engagement letter with Lewis & Ellis Actuaries and Consultants, a resolution for filing tax assessments, a resolution declaring surplus IT equipment, authority to seek bids for the utilities department, and a resolution to clean private property. The meeting includes the mayor’s report, the personnel and claims dockets, a utility leak adjustment docket, and a legal update from the city attorney.

An executive session is listed for potential and ongoing litigation, economic development involving a business or industry locating in the city, and personnel matters.

Southaven board meetings are open to the public.
