DeSoto County Weather: Veterans Day Warmup, Then Cold Front

After a frosty start to the weekend, DeSoto County weather is set for a steady warmup this week, with highs climbing into the low 70s by Veterans Day on Wednesday. Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Memphis say a cold front will then sweep through Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning, bringing a small chance of showers and sending temperatures back down in time for Friday night’s high school football playoff games.

The Weather Service calls it a “temperature roller coaster”: cool, crisp mornings and mild afternoons early in the week, then a second cooldown that could bring a widespread freeze to the Mid-South next weekend.

DeSoto County Weather Day by Day

Here is the National Weather Service point forecast for the Hernando area, issued Sunday morning, Nov. 8:

  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, high near 63. Fog is possible after 11 p.m., with a low around 39.
  • Monday: Fog early, then sunny with a high near 69. Fog could return after 10 p.m.; low around 43.
  • Tuesday: Patchy fog before 7 a.m., then partly sunny with a high near 70. Low around 49.
  • Wednesday (Veterans Day): Mostly sunny and the warmest day of the week, with a high near 72. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night; low around 47.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny and noticeably cooler, high near 60. Low around 38.
  • Friday: Sunny but chilly, high near 54. Clear Friday night with a low around 34.
  • Saturday: Sunny, high near 57. Low around 38.

Morning Fog on the Commute

Clear skies and nearly calm winds will keep fog in the forecast for the next few mornings, especially in low-lying areas and near creeks and rivers. Drivers on I-55, I-69, I-269 and Goodman Road should allow extra time Monday and Tuesday morning, use low-beam headlights and leave more space between vehicles when visibility drops.

The Weather Service said in its Sunday morning forecast discussion that it would watch conditions for possible Fog Advisories. Because the growing season officially ended Oct. 31, the agency is no longer issuing frost or freeze advisories this fall. Even so, some frost may form with the fog on the coldest mornings.

Cold Front Midweek, Chilly Playoff Friday

A weakening storm system from the Southern Plains will combine with a northern trough to push a cold front through the region Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. The Weather Service puts rain chances at only 20 to 30 percent across north Mississippi, with any rain amounts “light at best.”

The bigger story is the cooler air behind the front. Highs will drop from the low 70s on Wednesday to the mid-50s by Friday. Fans heading to Friday’s first-round MHSAA playoff games, which kick off at 7 p.m., should expect temperatures in the 40s, falling toward the mid-30s overnight. Blankets and layers are a good idea.

Forecasters also flagged increasing chances for a widespread freeze across the Mid-South next weekend, so residents should plan ahead for:

  • People: dress in layers, and check on elderly neighbors.
  • Pets: bring them indoors or give them warm, dry shelter.
  • Plants: cover or move tender plants inside before the colder nights.

Good Weather for Veterans Day Events

Wednesday’s mild, mostly sunny forecast is good news for Veterans Day ceremonies and luncheons around the county. Remember that many county and city offices will be closed that day.
