DeSoto County Fall Cleanup Set for Oct. 10-18 at 20 Sites

The DeSoto County Fall Cleanup returns Oct. 10-18, 2026, giving residents a free way to get rid of old furniture, mattresses, yard debris and other bulky items. The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors and DeSoto County Environmental Services will place dumpsters at 20 sites across the county for the nine-day event.

The twice-yearly cleanup is one of the county’s most popular services, helping homeowners clear out garages, sheds and yards before the holidays without paying for a private haul-off.

DeSoto County Fall Cleanup Dumpster Locations

According to the county’s official flyer, dumpsters will be at these locations from Oct. 10 through Oct. 18:

Hernando area

What You Can and Can’t Throw Away

The dumpsters are meant for bulky household items and yard waste. Items the county says are allowed include:

• Furniture and mattresses
• Lumber, fencing, carpet and bricks
• Tree limbs and leaves
• Plastic toys and general rubbish

Items that are not allowed in the cleanup dumpsters include:

• Tires
• Oil and paint
• Electronics and batteries
• Aerosols, all-purpose cleaners and anti-freeze
• Insecticides, herbicides and other household chemicals

Keeping prohibited items out of the dumpsters helps protect workers and keeps hazardous materials out of the landfill, so residents are asked to sort their loads before heading out.

Year-Round Options for Tires, Electronics and Paint

Items that can’t go in the fall cleanup dumpsters still have a place to go. DeSoto County offers year-round drop-off for electronics, used oil and waste tires. According to the county’s recycling guide, e-waste can be dropped at the DeSoto County Rubbish Facility (5255 W. Sandidge Road, Olive Branch), the DeSoto County Administration Building (365 Losher St., Hernando), the Olive Branch Maintenance Shop (10414 Highway 78) and Environmental Services (2339 Gwynn Road, Nesbit). Waste tires are accepted at the Rubbish Facility and at Environmental Services.

For latex paint, the county recommends drying it out before disposal: make sure the can is half full or less, mix in kitty litter at about a 1-to-1 ratio, let it dry with the lid off for a day or two, then put the solid can in regular trash. Oil-based paint should never be dried this way. The county notes it is highly flammable and must go to an approved disposal site.

Household hazardous waste collection is handled at a separate annual event each May, with details announced in the spring.
