Jan 11, 2025- Drivers were apparently behaving well on DeSoto County roads in the aftermath of the year’s first snowfall.
Anywhere from 5-8 inches of snow fell overnight Thursday through Friday, making for hazardous road conditions for drivers, many of which heeded warnings to stay off the roads while crews worked to remove snow and ice from them.
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office Saturday morning provided some quick statistics on deputies’ activities to address driver issues during the snowstorm.
The statistics indicated no motor vehicle accidents were reported, however there were 10 reports of driver slide offs and nine incidents where deputies responded to handle traffic hazards.
As of mid-morning Saturday, the Mississippi Department of Transportation reported roads in 30 north Mississippi counties, including DeSoto County, still had ice on road surfaces. MDOT continued to warn drivers to watch for icy road conditions and give crews a wide berth to allow them to clear the road surfaces.
On Saturday, MDOT crews reported making significant progress by working around the clock to keep Interstates and four and two-lane highways open during the latest winter weather event. Motorists are still urged to drive with extreme caution. Overnight, ice was reported on roads and bridges in 13 north Mississippi counties due to melting and re-freezing.
MDOT crews continue to treat and clear roadways in the affected areas. They will monitor road conditions into Sunday, as temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing in multiple northern counties until then.
