BROOKHAVEN, Miss. — A 65-year-old Brookhaven man has been arrested and charged with arson, accused of setting fire to a FEMA cottage in Brookhaven last month.
Kimberly Gayten was arrested on September 16, 2026, according to a release from the Mississippi Insurance Department. He is accused of setting fire to a FEMA cottage on Fulton Street in Brookhaven on August 28, 2026.
A man inside the trailer noticed smoke outside and reported seeing Gayten running from the area, the release states. Gayten was arrested by the Brookhaven Police Department, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted with the investigation.
The trailer sustained minor fire and smoke damage to the outside. Evidence is still being examined by the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory, and the total amount of damage has not yet been determined.
All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
