Garden club celebrates Arbor Day

Wild winter freezing temperatures accompanied by ice and snow prevented the celebration of Arbor Day by the Desoto Civic Garden Club (DCGC).  Usually this event is held in February, however it was canceled because of the extreme weather conditions and rescheduled for the first week in March.

At that time Lynn Dye, (left) DCGC member and coordinator for the activity, purchased a Jane Magnolia tree from Donna Maxwell, staff employee at Quality Landscape in Olive Branch.  This particular tree is a vigorous hardy type of magnolia which can withstand cold as well as the South’s hot summers.  Maximum height of the tree is ten to fifteen feet with a span of eight to twelve feet across. It adapts nicely in zones four to eight which would grow well in our area that is classified a zone seven.

Planting of the Jane Magnolia in March at Saucier Park in Southaven commemorated not only Arbor Day, but also the memory of all affected by COVID-19.

The DCGC members participating were: (left to right) Jane Borgognoni, Berta Crellin. Amye Kelly, Toni Thompson, and Emilie Michael.

DeSoto Civic Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs , Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc., and The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., Hills and Delta District.
