Officials are investigating a shooting incident Tuesday night that has left a Greenville police detective dead and others injured.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation released a statement Wednesday morning that it was investigating the shooting that took place about 8:30 p.m. near U.S. Highway 82 and state Highway 1 in Greenville.

“A Greenville police officer sustained fatal injuries,” the statement said. “The subject is being treated at a local hospital and is in custody of law enforcement.”

WTVA later said law enforcement identified the victim as Myeisha Stewart.

Gov. Tate Reeves was among several top officials who expressed condolences on social media.

During a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons made the following statement:

“Today, we feel the hurt of a 3-year-old son left without a mother,” Simmons said. “We feel the hurt of a mother and father that have lost a daughter. We feel the hurt of the police department that has lost an officer. The family is hurting. Our community is hurting.”

Simmons also had flags lowered and said grief counselors would be avilable for first responders dealing with Stewart’s death.

Few other details had been released. Stewart becomes the third Mississippi patrol officer killed in the line of duty in 2022.
