Special session to start on Wednesday

May 27, 2025 – Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves today has called a special session of the State Legislature on Wednesday, May 28, at 11 a.m.

“I’m calling a special session to begin tomorrow at 11 a.m.,” Reeves said. “Since it became apparent that a budget would not be passed during this year’s regular session, I’ve been clear that we should prioritize funding core government functions and keeping spending under control. That’s what the $7.135 billion proposed budget does. It funds the agencies and programs government needs to operate, while staying true to our conservative principles.”

Reeves does not expect the session to be lengthy. The proclamation calling the special session can be found here.

Estimates floated set the cost of a special session at approximately $100,000 a day. A similar situation took place in 2009 and then Gov. Haley Barbour sent lawmakers back into a special session which set a budget just short of the deadline.
