DeSoto Central boys’ basketball continued a drive through Region 1-7A competition with a 70-51 victory over visiting Oxford Tuesday night. With the victory, the 17-4 Jaguars moved to 5-0 in the region standings ahead of a Thursday night game at Horn Lake, which has had only one loss in the district standings.

“It’s going to be a tough place to play against another talented and physical group,” DeSoto Central coach Blake Orman said of the upcoming contest.

Oxford, at 11-8 overall, is now tied with Southaven at 2-3 in the 1-7A standings.

The Jaguars took a 16-11 lead in the first quarter and led 22-13 at the end of the quarter, as Jacob Curtis hit a pair of three-pointers to lead a balanced scoring attack.  DeSoto Central built the lead to 41-20 at halftime with Cam Champion scoring seven points in the quarter.

DeSoto Central broke the game open in the third quarter with 23 points in the eight-minute period, including four field goals for eight points from Blake Price. As the lead was built to over 30 points at 64-33 at the end of the period, the stop button was turned off the clock and reserves played the fourth quarter with a continuous running game clock.

“I thought we were really disciplined in our defensive effort,” Orman said. “I thought we had a lot of energy, a lot of toughness, moved the ball well, and played together. When we’re doing that, we’re really hard to beat.”

Price scored 14 points to lead DeSoto Central in scoring, while Champion and Josh Jackson each finished with 13 points. Collin Flanagan had 14 points to pace the Chargers.

(G) Oxford 58, DeSoto Central 37 Oxford took a 13-10 lead in the first quarter and ballooned the margin to 29-18 at halftime. DeSoto Central was able to get within 35-28 with 2:36 left in the third quarter but the Lady Chargers quickly extended the lead back to 14 at 44-30 by the end of the quarter.

Sydney Glahn led Oxford in scoring with 16 points. Londen Armstrong again paced the Lady Jaguars in scoring with 12 points.
