Morgan named AVCA Region 4 Coach of the Year
Lake Cormorant volleyball coach Christina Morgan is one of four coaches selected as Region 4 Coach of the Year from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, or AVCA, which made the announcement on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Morgan received the honor after her Lady Gators this fall won its fourth straight MHSAA state championship in a sweep of George County in the finals. This year’s squad finished with a 34-8 record and was 10-0 in Region 1-6A. Morgan also coached three-time Miss Volleyball Sofia Gonzalez, who has joined teammates Ma’Kayla Hill and Payton Davis as signees to play next season at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Gonzalez and Davis were named AVCA All-Region 4 at the conclusion of the season.
The Lady Gators did not lose a set in the postseason and went through 13 victories in a row after a five-set loss to Hernando on Sept. 18.
Lake Cormorant has now won state titles in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The Lady Gators were state runners-up in 2010, 2017, and 2018.
Morgan, who has coached Lake Cormorant since the school’s inception, this season reached 450 career coaching victories with the school.
She joined Brianne Groth of Byron Nelson (Trophy Club, Texas), Laura Crow of Conway, Arkansas, and Jessica Burke of St. Thomas More (Lafayette, Louisiana) as Region 4 Coaches of the Year.
This year’s recipients are a diverse group, as they represent teams from 37 states and a wide range of schools—large and small, urban and rural, public and private.
The recipients will be recognized at the 2025 AVCA Convention in Kansas City during the High School/Club Celebration on Friday, Dec. 19 at 5 p.m.
