Monday sports page: Soccer all-stars announced

Mar 24, 2025- The Mississippi Association of Coaches Monday announced the selection of players for the annual All-Star Games, set for July 8 at Brandon High School.  

DeSoto County players named for the North boys’ squad are Logan Correro of Lewisburg, Gavin Walker and Calvin Harrison of Hernando, Demarion Malone of Center Hill, and Jackson Warren of Olive Branch.  

On the North girls’ squad will be Mackenzie Carlton of DeSoto Central, Brianna Kimbrell of Lewisburg, and Lydia Knabb of Hernando, 

Ranger Report: Softball stays at number nine in poll

Despite suffering a sweep at the hands of No. 7 Copiah-Lincoln over the weekend, Northwest continues to hold strong at No. 9 in the latest NJCAA Division II Softball Rankings, released Monday afternoon.

It’s the third straight poll to feature the Rangers in the No. 9 slot, as Northwest currently boasts a 23-5 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the MACCC.

Jones College leads all MACCC programs in the latest polls, but the Bobcats slid from the No. 1 slot to No. 3. Copiah-Lincoln rose from seventh to fourth in the rankings, while Northeast dropped a spot from No. 11 to No. 12.

Pearl River, Itawamba and Mississippi Gulf Coast round out the MACCC teams in this week’s rankings, checking in at No. 15, No. 21 and No. 22, respectively. Additionally, Region 23 foe LSU-Eunice fell from 10th to 13th in the rankings.

Aside from Jones and Co-Lin, St. Johns River State (Fla.) moved up to the new No. 1 spot, followed by Murray State (Okla.) in second. Pima (Ariz.) rounds out the top five in the No. 5 overall slot.

Northwest Women’s Basketball to Host Tryouts and Team Camps

Northwest women’s basketball coach LaTaryl Williams has announced a tryout date for the 2025-26 season. An open tryout will be held on Tuesday, April 1 at Howard Coliseum from 5:30-7 P.M. The tryout will be limited only to uncommitted in-state student-athletes. Each participant is required to bring an updated physical and a $20 tryout fee the day of the event. A tryout waiver form is available to print and fill out here.

SPORTS ETC.: Olive Branch football coach Marcus Jamison announced the addition of new assistant coaches Monday. Brynden Mayfield will be the new wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.  Oliver Riley becomes the Quistors’ tight ends and H-Backs coach, and Tavares Johnson becomes the new quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

Jase Jordan of Hernando signed Monday to play baseball next season at Northeast Mississippi Community College.
