Monday sports page: Lake Cormorant dominates state powerlifting

Lake Cormorant won its fourth straight MHSAA 6A boys state powerlifting championship on Saturday, one day after the school took its second straight girls state 6A crown.
Competing at Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, the Gators amassed 38 team points to 23 for second-place GRenada. Pearl River Central was third with 21 points, followed by South Panola and West Harrison, each with 17.
Olive Branch lifters were seventh in the team scoring and Center Hill finished in a tie for 11th with seven points.
State champions from DeSoto County among 6A boys were Zane Rose (Lake Cormorant-114 pounds), Randy Sap (Lake Cormorant-132 pounds), Justin Griffin (Olive Branch-275 pounds), Tyler Wallace (Lake Cormorant-308 pounds), and Elijsah Westbrook (Center Hill-308+ pounds).
The Lake Cormorant girls took the state title with 61 team points to outdistance county rival Center Hill in second place at 37 team points. Olive Branch scored three points in the girls’ event.
State champions from DeSoto County schools in 6A were Osiris Mariche (Lake Cormorant-97 pounds), Jasmine Stapleton (Center Hill-105 pounds), Kaylee Nelson (Lake Cormorant-114 pounds), Brooke O’Connor (Lake Cormorant-123 pounds), Zamoria Nelson (Lake Cormorant-132 pounds), Jania Rose (Lake Cormorant-148 pounds), Alana McGowan (Lake Cormorant-165 pounds), Kambriel Chine (Center Hill-181 pounds), and Dynasty Noel (Lake Cormorant-198 pounds).
Southaven had the best boys’ team result among 7A schools, finishing in a tie for seventh place with seven points. DeSoto Central scored five points and Lewisburg one point. There were no individual state champions from county 7A schools.
In the 7A girls’ competition, Southaven had the highest finish as a team with a tie for sixth place with eight points. Lewisburg was right behind in a tie for eighth place with seven points. DeSoto Central scored six points, Hernando five and Horn Lake scored three points.
The lone 7A individual state champion, Taylor Smith of Southaven, made an all-time Mississippi record-setting squat lift of 570 pounds on her way to the 242+ pound division.
