The MHSAA state high school track and field championships were held Saturday, May 4 at Pearl High School.
In Class 7A, DeSoto Central had the highest team finish of county boys’ teams, finishing in 10th place with a team score of 33 points. Southaven was 11th with 24 points and Horn Lake was 15th with 16 points.
Among girls’ teams, Southaven had the highest team finish, in seventh place with a score of 34.50 points. Hernando took 12th with 25 points followed by Lewisburg in 19th place with five points and DeSoto Central in 20th place with four points.
Individual event champions from DeSoto County in 7A were DeSoto Central’s Cornelius Bennett in the boys’ high jump (6’4″), and Hernando’s Kaityn Burge in the girls’ 1,600 meter run (5:00.43), and 3,200 meter run (11:08.97).
Clinton won both the boys’ and girls’ team championships in 7A.
In Class 6A, Center Hill took 14th among boys with 18 points and was fifth in the girls’ team standings with 48 points. Olive Branch was sixth overall in the team event with 46 points and did not score among girls. Lake Cormorant was 11th among girls with 31 points and did not score among boys.
In the individual events, there was one state champion from DeSoto County in 6A. Caden Louder of Olive Branch was the champion in the boys’ 1,600 meter run (4:35.13).
Hattiesburg won both boys’ and girls’ state team championships in 6A.
