Lady Rangers stay number one, Harrell is MACCC Goalkeeper of the Week

Sept. 3, 2024 – After starting the season with a 3-0 record and earning two victories against nationally-ranked opponents, the Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s soccer team is holding steady at No. 1 in the latest NJCAA Division II Rankings, released Tuesday afternoon.

Northwest opened the season on August 24 with a victory against Mineral Area College, before garnering a 3-2 victory against No. 7 Heartland and a 4-0 triumph against No. 6 Northeast (Neb.) on Labor Day.

Fellow MACCC foe and reigning NJCAA champion Jones College remains right behind the Lady Rangers at No. 2 in the nation, followed by third-ranked Phoenix College, No. 4 Johnson County (Kan.) and fifth-ranked Heartland.

Holmes dropped a slot to No. 6, while Northeast (Neb.) moved down a spot to seventh. Meanwhile, Pearl River jumped from No. 13 to No. 10, while Mississippi Gulf Coast remained unranked, but receiving votes.

Northwest will return to action on Tuesday, September 10 against Southwestern Illinois, slated for a 3 P.M. first kick.

HARRELL NAMED MACCC GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

After collecting 10 saves in a 3-2 victory against No. 7 Heartland last Wednesday, Northwest sophomore goalkeeper Anna Kathryn Harrell has earned MACCC Goalkeeper of the Week honors, the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

It is the first conference award of the 2024 season for Harrell and the seventh MACCC Goalkeeper of the Week honor for her career. The Tupelo native also earned NJCAA All-Region 23 and All-American accolades from the NJCAA and United Soccer Coaches organization last season.

In the win against Heartland, Harrell picked up her 20th career victory for Northwest. Through three matches, she has 13 total saves against two goals and has also posted a full shutout and a combined shutout.

Ranked No. 1 in the nation, the Lady Rangers (3-0) will have the rest of the week off before welcoming Southwestern Illinois (Sept. 10) and St. Louis (Sept. 13) to Senatobia.
