Courtney to speak at FCA golf scramble
Next month’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) annual State Qualifying Golf Scramble will feature Bill Courtney as its special speaker.
The 15th annual golf scramble is being played this year at Cherokee Valley Golf Club in Olive Branch. The date of the tournament is Monday, Aug. 30.
Winners in the net and gross divisions will advance to the state championship tournament which will be played on Monday, Sept. 20 at Old Waverly in West Point.
Many will know Courtney as the volunteer football coach at Manassas High School in Memphis and took over a downtrodden team and brought hope to the underprivileged inner city youth in that area.
The story was so compelling that it spawned a documentary film, Undefeated, that won an Academy Award and a book Against The Grain.
Title sponsors this year are Entergy, G&W Diesel/EVS and LANDERS Automotive Group. Corporate sponsors include BancorpSouth, BankPlus, C&M Builders, Cougar Chemical, Hernando Smiles and Strike Zone Bowling Lanes.
Along with the golf, there will be a drawing held for a Big Green Egg grill ($800 value) donated by Southaven Supply. Shotgun starts are at 8 a.m. (light breakfast available) and 1:30 p.m.
Entry cost per player is $150 (foursome $600) with all proceeds supporting the FCA. $150 hole sponsorships are still available.
The scramble will provide each player with an FCA baseball cap, goody bag, team picture and lunch.
